Why isn't Phil Mickelson playing in the 2026 PGA Championship?
The second major tournament on the 2026 professional golf calendar begins this week, but a big-name former winner will not be participating in the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
After missing the Masters in April, two-time PGA champion Phil Mickelson will not be a part of the field in Pennsylvania this week. Mickelson revealed his decision earlier this month in an interview with Flushing It Golf, citing a family health matter.
“I wish I could," Mickelson said of playing in the PGA Championship. "I can’t, unfortunately. I’m hoping to play the rest of the year after that, but I honestly don’t know.”

In addition to missing the Masters and PGA Championship, Mickelson is also taking a break from playing LIV Golf events, which he announced in early February.
Mickelson has two wins in the PGA Championship, first in 2005 and then in 2021 at the age of 50. That upset victory made him the oldest major champion.
The six-time major champion left for LIV shortly after that win, with his best major finish since the move coming at the Masters in 2023, when he finished tied for second.
