Why Darryn Peterson is canceling workouts with NBA teams
Ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, few prospects are more intriguing than Kansas' Darryn Peterson.
One of the top recruits in the country last offseason, Peterson has been pegged as a high lottery pick since his high school days. However, his lone season of college basketball raised some questions, and so has the pre-draft process.
Peterson raised eyebrows when he opted to only work out for the Washington Wizards, who hold the draft's No. 1 pick. He canceled a workout with the Utah Jazz, and team insider Ben Anderson reported last week that the decision stems from his team's confidence that he will be the No. 1 overall pick.

He certainly has a shot, though some projections have BYU's AJ Dybantsa going to Washington ahead of Peterson. Dybantsa and fellow top prospect Cameron Boozer both worked out for Utah, which holds the No. 2 pick.
Peterson's one campaign in Lawrence featured some major ups and downs. He averaged more than 20 points per game, but he routinely had to exit games due to cramping. He claimed during the pre-draft process that bloodwork revealed a high dose of creatine as the cramping culprit.
Though Peterson's second-half absences drew criticism, it hasn't prevented him from being viewed as one of the draft's top prospects. Whether his team's confidence that he will go with the first pick is warranted, however, remains to be seen.
