A former NBA player is taking some heat for a trip to the White House. Tristan Thompson was at the James Brady Press Briefing Room on Thursday discussing how to protect student athletes and their financial futures.

The Canadian discussed the issues of NIL capital and how to support those athletes. NIL stands for Name, Image and Likeness and is an investment firm which allows student-athletes to earn money through endorsements and marketing.

Fans questioned why Tristan Thompson took part in the visit

Online, many wondered why Tristan is the one to speak on this matter. In addition, many were puzzled as to why he went to the White House of all places to do so. Some joked that the former NBA champion is worried Donald Trump will send him back to Canada. Another wondered if he was looking to transition into politics.

Tristan hasn’t officially retired from basketball but hasn’t played since the end of the 2014-25 season. The native of Brampton, Ontario, helped the Cleveland Cavaliers to their only NBA championship in 2016.

It doesn’t sound like Tristan’s image in many peoples’ eyes is getting any better. He posted a Snapchat photo recently with Vice President JD Vance. This prompted some people to call him a clown. Over the years, Tristan has gotten his share of shots taken at him. In 2023, his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Khloé Kardashian, appeared to fire some subtle ones at him. While wishing him a happy birthday, Khloé also said she hoped the Canadian would continue “to crave change, healing, and transformation.” The ex-couple have two kids.

In his address at the White House, Tristan insisted that when it comes to student-athletes, they need “to create a system to protect them.” Before going pro, Tristan had a strong amateur career, which included being a McDonald’s All-American in 2010. The Texas Longhorns centre was selected fourth overall by the Cavs in the 2011 NBA Draft.
