- Before he was Tommy DeVito in *Goodfellas* or Nicky Santoro in *Casino*, Joe Pesci was a barber.
- Frankie Valli’s brother Bobby recalled how the future Oscar winner started as a barber and lounge singer before his acting career took off.
- Pesci was nominated for three Oscars throughout his career, winning for his work in *Goodfellas*.
Frankie Valli’s former barber might be familiar to film fans.
The Four Seasons singer’s brother, Bobby Valli, recently recalled the early days of Frankie’s career and mentioned an Oscar winner who started out cutting hair before he made it big. The actor in question? Joe Pesci.
“He cut my hair. That’s right. Joe used to work down on Franklin Street,” Bobby revealed on the *Nostalgia Tonight With Joe Sibilia* podcast,” “It was called Branch Barbers. And I used to go there for haircuts.”
He added, “My brother used to go to Joey for haircuts. And my brother was going to a beautician school, and he was becoming a barber.”

Bobby, who sang, wrote, produced, and performed songs not unlike his brother, added that Pesci “was a character in his own right.”
“Joey was a great guy. Joey came from the area too,” he said, referring to the Silver Lake neighborhood outside Newark. “And he was a child star, and he had a group. He had a group with Frankie Vincent.”
Vincent and Pesci were lounge singers earlier in their careers before they turned to acting, and they remained friends throughout. “Joey did some low-budget movies, and eventually it led to him getting into *Raging Bull*, which catapulted his career,” Bobby said. Vincent appeared in the boxing drama as well.
The actors also appeared together in* **Casino* and *Goodfellas*, the latter which earned Pesci an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as mercurial gangster Tommy DeVito. Pesci was also nominated for *Raging Bull* and *The Irishman* — all directed by Martin Scorsese.

A career highlight for Vincent, who died in 2017, was appearing as Phil Leotardo on *The Sopranos*. Pesci paid for Vincent’s burial, Bobby said, noting that the actor “never forgot the neighborhood.”

Scorsese paid tribute to Vincent when he died, mentioning his work ethic and partnership with Pesci. “Frank Vincent was someone I could count on,” he said. “He was a natural who was at ease in front of the camera — on a set or on a stage. He made it look easy in all respects. He was genuine. We worked together on three pictures, each time with his old partner Joe Pesci, and I always marveled at his genius for improvisation.”
He added, “He was a hard-working actor, he understood the world we were portraying so well that he really didn’t appear to be acting at all. I will always marvel at his artistry, and consider myself lucky to have had the chance to work with him and to know him.”
