After nine seasons, countless “legendary” moments and one very long story, How I Met Your Mother delivered a finale that left some fans scratching their heads.
The sitcom, which aired from 2005 to 2014, chronicled the lives of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his close-knit group of friends in New York City. The series is framed around Ted's narration (Bob Saget) to his children, Penny (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Luke (David Henrie), about the events leading up to his meeting their mother.
After nine seasons of intricate storytelling, the series finale delivered a conclusion that left fans divided. While some felt it was a fitting end, others believed it unraveled key character arcs built over the years.
Here’s everything to know about the ending of How I Met Your Mother, 12 years after it aired.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the series finale of How I Met Your Mother.

In the final episode, Ted met Tracy McConnell (Cristin Milioti), the titular mother, at the Farhampton train station, leading to a loving relationship and the birth of their two children. However, it's later revealed that Tracy died after a prolonged illness.
In 2030, Ted's children, having heard their father's story, encourage him to pursue a romantic relationship with Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), his longtime friend and former love interest.
The finale also addressed other main characters' arcs: Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin end up divorcing, while Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) expand their family.

Ted and Robin’s relationship was one of the most debated aspects of How I Met Your Mother, and the series finale ultimately confirmed that their story wasn’t over. While Ted spent nine seasons recounting the journey of how he met Tracy, the final moments of the show revealed that Tracy had passed away years prior.
In a surprising twist, Ted’s children encouraged him to go after their “Aunt” Robin, recognizing that the entire story he had told them was more about her than their late mother.
The series concluded with Ted standing outside Robin’s apartment, holding the blue French horn — a callback to their romantic history in the pilot episode when Ted stole it for Robin after she saw it on their first date.
From this point onwards, Robin kept it on the mantle in her apartment.
Did Barney end up single?

By the end of the show, Barney’s love life took an unexpected turn. After years of being known as a womanizer, Barney settled down and married Robin in the show's final season.
However, their marriage was short-lived, lasting only three years before they divorced due to their conflicting lifestyles — Robin’s demanding career as a journalist kept her traveling, while Barney struggled to adapt to a committed relationship.
Following the divorce, Barney seemingly returned to his bachelor ways. However, his life took a significant turn when he unexpectedly became a father from a one-night stand. This moment was a turning point for him — despite his past indifference toward settling down, fatherhood changed him completely.
In one of the most emotional scenes of the finale, Barney held his newborn daughter and told her, "You are the love of my life. Everything I have and everything I am is yours forever."

Marshall and Lily remained the most stable couple in the group. He achieved his long-standing dream of becoming a judge, earning the nickname "Judge Fudge" along the way.
Eventually, he reached an even higher milestone in his legal career when he was elected to the New York Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Lily continued to thrive in her art career, though much of her focus remained on their growing family.
Throughout the series, the couple navigated major life changes, including Lily’s brief move to San Francisco after breaking off her engagement with Marshall, plus arguments about their respective careers.
Eventually, the pair married and welcomed two children together, Marvin (named after Marshall’s father) and Daisy. In the finale, it’s revealed that they have a third child.

The HIMYM finale sparked heated debate, with many fans feeling it downplayed the story’s emotional payoff. After spending nine seasons building up Ted and Tracy’s love story, the revelation that she dies and Ted ultimately reunites with Robin felt abrupt and unsatisfying to some viewers.
Many argued that the show had spent years proving why Ted and Robin weren’t meant to be, only to reverse course in the final moments.
Others defended the ending as a realistic portrayal of love and loss, with Ted’s journey coming full circle. The creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, had planned the conclusion from the beginning, even filming Ted’s kids’ reaction years in advance.
While some appreciated the callback to the blue French horn, others felt the finale rushed through key character developments and reduced Tracy to a mere plot device.
After the finale aired in 2014, Thomas thanked his fans for their support.
“We did a finale about life’s twists and turns and that is not always what happens … but THANKS!” he wrote on X.
Will there be any spinoffs or revivals?

While How I Met Your Mother officially ended in 2014, the franchise was briefly revived with How I Met Your Father, a spinoff starring Hilary Duff that premiered on Hulu in January 2022.
With a similar concept — Sophie (Duff) recounts the story of how she met her son’s father — the show exists in the same universe as HIMYM but has minimal connections to the original series.
Though there were occasional callbacks, such as the reappearance of the MacLaren’s Pub set and a cameo from Smulders as Robin, the show largely focused on a new cast and storyline.
Despite an initial wave of excitement, Hulu canceled the series after two seasons in 2023, leaving its central mystery unresolved.
As of now, there are no official plans for a How I Met Your Mother revival. Radnor and Thomas did team up in 2025, however, for an official rewatch podcast, How We Made Your Mother.
