Survivor is house of lies! Deception. Trickery. Subterfuge. You never know whom you can trust. Of course, lying can be pretty fun… even if you don’t do it particularly well.
Take Steven Ramm, for instance. In an exclusive deleted scene from this week’s episode of Survivor 49 that can be watched above, we see Steven deciding to engage in a bit of tomfoolery as he returns to the beach with a Tree Mail message, and decides the reading of said message is a perfect opportunity to prank the rest of his tribe.
“The game is changing yet again,” Steven begins with his faux-reading. “Drop your buffs.”
The problem is, the delivery is all off as it is way too matter-of-fact, without a hint of surprise, excitement, or consternation. While most people appear to immediately see through the ruse (“Liar!” responds a tribemate), at least one person was fooled.
“Honestly, Steven, I believed it,” Savannah Louie says. “And I was panicked.”

While Steven’s prank was A+ in inspiration and C+ in execution, what is even more interesting in the clip is a window into Sophie Segreti’s headspace before the immunity challenge.
“The immunity necklace is all about need versus want,” she explains. “I want to wear that shark tooth thing through to final three. That's what I want, but I don't need it today, I think. Look, I'm going to give it my all today, but I do feel like I have people who have my back and it wouldn't be me going home. And so I don't think I need that necklace.”
That’s important because the woman running a season-long undefeated challenge streak into day 15 was starting to worry if her reputation was beginning to precede her, and if she was painting a bigger and bigger target on her back with each and every win.
“What's tough is I haven't yet lost a challenge on Survivor,” Sophie says. “And there's a part of me that's like: If I win tonight, will I become one of those Survivors where the second I don't win an immunity, every single person is like, ‘Yeah, we got to get her out of here.’ It’s terrible. I feel like I'm constantly knocking on wood out here because you can't ever be sure, but we'll see.”

In the end, Sophie did go for the immunity challenge win, but lost in an epic showdown against Savannah. And her challenge prowess would prove to be a key plot point that others would later use as a reason to either want her out (too hard to beat) or want her around (as a shield).
