Rose Byrne got roasted over her preference to describe her longtime partner Bobby Cannavale as her "husband" when she stepped out to accept Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ Woman of the Year Award.

Oscar nominee Byrne, 46, appeared at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., on Friday, Feb. 13, for Hasty Pudding's annual celebration (and roast) of its honoree, Byrne, for an award "presented annually to performers who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment," according to Hasty Pudding's official website. She was introduced and roasted at the event by Harvard seniors Daisy Nussbaum and Isabel Wilson, who made light of Byrne's past comments describing Cannavale, 55, as her "husband" after they made "stereotypical" jokes about her native Australia.

"Maybe we shouldn't be making stereotypical Australia comments, anyway. I mean, Rose could be homesick," Wilson said. "I'm sure you miss it. But think all the great things America has that Australia doesn't. We have your husband, Bobby Cannavale," Nussbaum added.

"Actually Daisy, while Rose refers to Cannavale as her husband, the pair never officially got married," Wilson responded.

"Huh. I guess what you're saying is always a bridesmaid, never a bride," Nussbaum added, with a reference to Byrne's role in the 2011 wedding comedy Bridesmaids.

Byrne and Cannavale first met in 2012 through mutual friends and made their red carpet debut as a couple in June 2013, when they made their red carpet debut together. They share two sons: Rocco, 9, and Rafa, 8. (Cannavale also shares an older son, Jake, from a previous marriage to Jenny Lumet.)

ā€œI say ā€˜married.' We just haven’t gone to the courthouse yet, but we’re married," Byrne told The Washington Post in a November 2025 interview, while speaking about her and Cannavale's relationship.

As part of the Harvard social club's annual Woman of the Year ceremony — Michael Keaton received his own award at Hasty Pudding's Man of the Year event on Feb. 6 — Byrne also "married" the organization's mascot, an actual pudding pot, as part of the roast.

"Dear pudding pot, or as I like to call you 'Puddy,' I’d like to start off by acknowledging that you are way out of my league. I'm also a little bit upset that before me, you were with 75 other women," she joked during the event, in reference to the dozens of Women of the Year award winners before her. "Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Coolidge, Julia Roberts, Liza Minnelli, Cher, and the list goes on. Seriously, what could Cher have that I don't – other than the obvious things? Now onto my vows. I promise that you will be my everything until I meet a man named Oscar. I promise to never actually produce or star in a third Peter Rabbit film."
