Richard Gere and Diana Silvers are teaming up for the adaptation of Lisa Halliday’s critically acclaimed novel, Asymmetry.
The Pretty Woman actor, 76, and the Booksmart actress, 28, play a 70-year-old famous author and a young editorial assistant, respectively, who fall in love in a secret, life-changing relationship. PEOPLE has the exclusive first look image of the two filming the movie together in New York City’s Riverside Park on Thursday, July 2.
In the photo, the actors sit on a bench, sharing a laugh. The pivotal scene marks the first time Gere’s Ezra and Silvers’ Alice meet in Central Park.

“Their one moment of eye contact sparks a connection that leads them both down a life-changing rabbit hole, where they create a private world just for two,” the synopsis reads. “Ezra, famous for his audacious work, finds someone with whom he can be openly vulnerable, and Alice finds the courage to explore her own aspirations as a writer. Until it is all put at risk when their secret relationship is exposed.”
Following its 2018 release, Halliday’s debut novel went on to make The New York Times’ most remarkable books of the 21st century list. Now, its adaptation will be helmed by Oscar-winning director Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai) with a script penned by Zwick, Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz.

“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Ed and Marshall on transposing Alice and Ezra’s story for the screen,” Halliday said in a press release of adapting the script. “I am enormously grateful to them for their humor, ingenuity, courage, compassion, and dedication.”

Zwick, who is returning to feature films for the first time in eight years, added, “Like so many others I was charmed by Lisa’s book, not just because it’s emotional, insightful, and very funny, but because it’s about two people who discover that what the world calls asymmetry can in fact have another name: love.”
Deadline first announced the movie in early May, and production kicked off in NYC last week.
“Asymmetry tells an unconventional love story that explores an improbable connection between two people at very different stages in their lives, which challenges their — and our — preconceptions about love and power,” Stacey Snider, FilmNation Entertainment chief creative officer, and Clay Pecorin, Rainmaker Films co-founder and partner, added.
