Off Campus star Ella Bright's favorite scene has nothing to do with romance.
Series creator Louisa Levy shares the idea behind the emotional Hannah-Allie moment.
Plus, Bright breaks down what went into Hannah's big finale performance.
This article contains spoilers for season 1 of Off Campus.
"That's my favorite scene, completely, hands down."
No, Ella Bright isn't talking about Hannah singing karaoke. And no, she isn't talking about that iconic book scene with Garrett (Belmont Cameli) — though she does love that too. She's talking about the moment that Hannah tells her best friend, Allie (Mika Abdalla), the truth about "her friend" in high school who was raped.
But she doesn't have to say much because, in true best friend fashion, Allie's always known that Hannah was "the friend."

The idea came from series creator Louisa Levy's real-life bestie.
"One of my best friends is our writers' assistant, and she pitched that moment [of] 'You're the friend,'" Levy tells Entertainment Weekly. "And I almost started crying. So it's been a moment that I've protected, because early on, there were discussions about, 'Shouldn't Allie know?' And I was like, 'No.' Because if we know that Allie knows from the beginning, we don't have this beautiful moment. And I think it's so important to show that Allie knew, but she let Hannah get there and tell her in her own time, which I think is so powerful. When Hannah needs Allie, she'll be there."
That was actually the scene that Bright and Abdalla read together for their chemistry test. "That was intense to do for a few hours with different people," Bright remembers, referencing a full day of reading with different actors during the casting process. "But when I did it with Mika, it just felt really real. It felt like she had been my friend for a really, really long time, and we connected through that scene. So it was really lovely to get to actually film that and be proud of that scene with her."

For Hannah, that scene leads to a massive breakthrough. What Allie says to her helps her finish her song for the pop showcase, which is another moment that Bright won't soon forget. "Our amazing, talented music team had a lot of patience with me," she says with a laugh.

Determined not to use any hand doubles for the big performance, Bright had to learn ... a lot.
"I learned piano, guitar, basically to sing. It was kind of crazy. It was a big training moment for me," she says. "I had a little shoebox apartment, and we had the entire looping station, three guitars, two keyboards, a ukulele, everything squished into this one little space, and I was trying to practice as much as I could when we got back from work."
As for the song, Bright says it was pre-recorded, but that she also sang live on the day. "When you are doing the scene on the day, the emotion that you might be singing in was different in the recording studio. So for that, I had pre-recorded, but then I also re-recorded a few of the lines on the day. When I saw Bel [Belmont] and Mika in the audience, that kind of drove the performance in a different way."

In some ways, Bright's experience mirrored Hannah's (minus the major emotional breakthrough).
"It was terrifying, singing in front of a live audience," she says. "It felt like I was actually on stage. They made me sound much better than I probably was in real life."
