Noah Wyle recently revealed that his commitment to ER forced him to turn down major film roles over the years
Looking back, the 55-year-old said he's "almost glad" he missed out because the actors who landed those roles made them their own
Wyle is now enjoying renewed success with The Pitt, where he stars and also serves as a writer, director and executive producer
Noah Wyle's lengthy run on ER made him one of television's most recognizable stars, but it also forced him to pass on several high-profile film roles.
Looking back during a recent appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, the 55-year-old actor reflected on the "tons" of opportunities that slipped away while filming the long-running series.
“Happens all the time,” he told host Steve Kmetko. “We talked about a couple of them, actually. Good Night, [and] Good Luck — George [Clooney] offered me a part in that. I couldn't get out of ER to do it.”

Wyle portrayed Dr. John Carter on ER for 11 seasons after joining the cast of the groundbreaking medical drama in 1994. Yet, as one of the show's central stars, his demanding filming schedule left little room for outside projects, even when some of Hollywood's biggest directors came calling.
“I was offered part of Private Ryan, Saving Private Ryan. Couldn't get out of ER to do it,” Wyle said, revealing he had been offered the role of Corporal Upham, ultimately played by Jeremy Davies.
Still, Wyle made it clear he has no lingering regrets about how things unfolded.

“It was a bunch that, you know, in retrospect, I almost am glad that I didn't do them, because, you know, those guys made those parts,” he told Kmetko, adding that “[Davies] was so phenomenal in that… I couldn't imagine doing anything close to what he did.”

Nevertheless, rather than dwelling on the roles that got away, Wyle appears more focused on the success he's enjoying today.
The Pitt has become one of HBO's recent hits, with Wyle pulling double duty both in front of and behind the camera as the series' star, writer, director and executive producer.
This year also marked a career milestone, as he became the first male actor to sweep all five major television acting awards in a single season for his performance as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch – taking home honors from the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Actor Awards and Television Critics Association Awards.
