Nicolas Cage and his wife, Riko Shibata, attended the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, Madden, together on Wednesday, Nov. 4

Their rare public appearance was in celebration of the new biopic, in which Cage portrays NFL icon John Madden

The upcoming film premieres in select theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 11

Nicolas Cage and his wife Riko Shibata spent a date night celebrating his latest film, Madden.

The couple attended the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The 62-year-old actor wore a black suit with a muted orange tie and black leather loafers.

Cage and Shibata posed for photos together, and Shibata, 31, showed off her geometric-printed mini dress. The long-sleeve dress featured rustic orange, dark brown and bright teal details. She accessorized with orange pointed-toe pumps and a brown leather purse.

Shibata and Cage’s appearance follows their attendance at the opening of George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s Lucas Museum of Narrative Art on Sept. 19. Although the couple was recently spotted together, they have maintained privacy throughout their relationship and make rare public appearances together.

The actor told Flaunt magazine in 2021 that he and Shibata first met through mutual friends while he was filming the 2021 movie Prisoners of the Ghostland in Japan. The pair were first linked in February 2020 when they were photographed holding hands. The couple got engaged over FaceTime, Cage revealed when he appeared on his brother Marc Coppola’s radio show in August 2020.

They married in a “very small and intimate” ceremony in Las Vegas in February 2021, they told PEOPLE at the time. After their nuptials, the newlyweds made their red carpet debut in July 2021 at the premiere of Cage’s film Pig. In September 2022, the couple welcomed their daughter, August Francesca Coppola Cage, now 4.

Cage also shares his oldest son Weston, 35, with ex Christina Fulton, and younger son Kal-El, 20, with ex-wife Alice Kim. Cage has been married five times: he was previously married to Patricia Arquette, Lisa Marie Presley, Kim and Erika Koike.

Their attendance at the Madden premiere comes a week before the film premieres in theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 11. It will stream globally on Prime Video on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

The new biopic chronicles the life of NFL icon John Madden, the former Oakland Raiders head coach who became a beloved broadcast football color commentator and helped pioneer the sports video game industry. (Madden died in December 2021 at age 85.) Cage stars alongside  Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney, Shane Gillis, and Christian Bale, who portrays the late Raiders owner Al Davis. The late NFL owner died in 2011 at 82.

The movie “chronicles John Madden’s incredible journey alongside best friend and true original Al Davis – from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders, to becoming football’s most recognizable voice, to building the worldwide Madden NFL video game,” reads an official synopsis for the movie.

“Madden is the celebration of a brilliant mind whose once in a century spirit and personality, partnership with his daring wife Virginia, lifelong friendships, and infectious love of people and football transcended the world of sports.”
