Michael J. Fox in 'Shrinking' season 3

With the new Shrinking season 3 trailer comes our first look at Michael J. Fox's return to acting.

It was announced in May that the beloved Back to the Future star would appear in an undisclosed guest-star capacity on the Apple TV dramedy. Details on his role are still largely under wraps, but the footage shows him playing a character with Parkinson's disease, the same condition Fox has been battling for years.

Fox appears in a scene with Harrison Ford, who plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a therapist at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center who also suffers from Parkinson's. The two sit in the waiting area of a doctor's office and make light of their common situations.

The show marks the first live-action onscreen acting appearance by Fox since his retirement in 2020. Though, he clarified to Entertainment Tonight in 2024, "If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great. I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out."

Though he wasn't seen in the film, he voiced the role of Michael J. the Fox in Disney's animated Zootopia 2, which premiered last month. Fox also voiced a role in the 2021 animated short Back Home Again and appeared as the subject of 2023 documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.

Jeff Daniels is another new addition to the Shrinking cast in season 3, which brings back guest stars Brett Goldstein, Damon Wayans Jr., Wendie Malick, and Cobie Smulders. Starring Jason Segel as a therapist dealing with grief, the show returns to Apple TV on Jan. 28 with an hourlong season premiere. A weekly release will follow with the finale set for April 28.
