Michael Imperioli thinks the Sopranos characters might not agree with his real-life politics.

The White Lotus star, who is an outspoken Democrat, speculated that the characters on the classic HBO crime series might support Donald Trump if the show was airing new episodes in the 2020s.

"The show is about the American dream, especially through the eyes of immigrants," Imperioli told The Independent. "I think that would be one of the big themes if it was made today: the current climate in the U.S. and what they're doing to immigrants. The fact is that these characters are all immigrants, but I think a lot of them would probably be Trump supporters, oddly enough."

He continued, "So how do they reconcile those things? When Italians came over — and people forget this, or they don't want to see it — a lot of them were undocumented."

Sopranos creator David Chase previously shared his thoughts on how the show's characters might react to Trump's presidency, noting that Robert Iler's A.J. Soprano would probably fit right in with the administration.

"He might be the new chief of staff," he told The New York Times in 2019. "He'd be buddy-buddy with Stephen Miller, I know that."

Chase was more skeptical about what James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano might think of Trump.

"He would think the guy was full of [expletive]," he said. "Whether he thought he was a good president or not — I don't know that Tony thought much about that question at all, with anybody who was in office. But I know Tony would have thought Trump was penny-ante, in terms of his lying and presentation."

Imperioli, who portrayed Christopher Moltisanti on all six seasons of the series, previously used Sopranos characters to make Instagram posts in support of Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential race, including one in which he joked that Trump behaved poorly during a trip to the show's Bada Bing strip club.

"Trump stopped by the Bing one night," he wrote on Instagram in 2020 (per Vanity Fair). "We gave him VIP treatment, everything on the house and he didn't tip anyone! Zero! Stiffed the whole staff…even Peppino the bathroom attendant. Unforgivable. VOTE BIDEN."

However, the actor clarified to Vanity Fair that he didn't necessarily think that all the characters would be Biden supporters. "I just thought I'd try to have a sense of humor with it," he explained. "Taking these memes and the politics and just trying to say, 'The Sopranos are woke now, and they're campaigning for Biden.'"

In his conversation with The Independent, Imperioli also said that prior to Gandolfini's death in 2013, the cast considered reuniting for another Sopranos project.

"There was even talk at one point of us doing a prequel, like with us in it — which given our age didn't really make any sense," the actor said. "I remember Jim was like, 'What are we gonna do? Wear wigs and girdles like Star Trek?'"
