Meg Stalter says cooking has become a meditative way to unwind and care for herself during her busy schedule

The comedian is partnering with Knorr to create comedic videos roasting chicken and will host a live chicken “roast” in N.Y.C.

The comedian and Hacks star, 35, tells PEOPLE the “meditative” effect that learning to cook has had on her life while discussing her partnership with Knorr to comedically roast unseasoned chickens.

Stalter started really getting into cooking about two years ago, she says, which has been “so much fun” and “added so much” to her life.

The actress, who is currently starring as Mary Todd Lincoln in the Broadway musical Oh Mary!, which she says she loves “so much,” says cooking has become “a really nice way to wind down at the end of the day.”

“I started seeing it like that instead of like extra work on top of the day,” she says. “It’s kind of meditative to me to throw on a podcast and just cook by myself.”

“Making time for a meal prep and taking care of yourself is the most important while you’re doing something like that,” she says. “You get to Sunday on your day off and maybe you don’t want to do meal prep, but as soon as you start doing it, you’re thinking, ‘okay, I’m taking care of myself.’”

She adds, “I love cooking for my girlfriend, so when I’m cooking for other people, it makes it more fun for me as well.”

In her cooking journey, however, the actress admits she has had a few bumps in the road, including a recent flour mix-up.

“I tried to make a date cake, and I’ve made it before, but I tried to get gluten-free flour, but instead I accidentally got extra gluten flour, like too gluten-y,” she recalls. “I don’t know what people use for that, but it was really bad. I remade it though, and it was great.”

While Stalter says she was “nervous to cook meat” at first, products like the Knorr Granulated Chicken Bouillon help her elevate her cooking.

“It does make it…really easy to make the chicken taste really amazing, so that’s really easy and makes me look like a really good chef,” she jokes.

The comedian is partnering with Knorr to joke about unseasoned chicken in a series of social videos.

“I roasted you, and now I’m gonna roast you,” she says in one video, looking at a plate of appetizing grilled chicken before turning to bland chicken and making a disgusted noise.

“I totally forgot I’m hosting the gals tonight for a hauntingly beautiful dinner, but hey, I’m not rattled,” she says in another video. “I can get a swell slow-roasted flavor fast with Knorr Chicken Boullion.”

She continues, “Last week, boring Susan served us boiled chicken with parsley. Yuck! What was that lady thinking? Sue and the chicken deserve to get roasted.”

Stalter says filming the 1950s-esque videos was “really fun,” like building “a little world” while using chicken in a comedic way.

“The stuff I got to wear was really fun,” she says. “There was a moment I got a lot of sauce on my dress which everyone had a big laugh about.”

Stalter is hosting the Knorr Chicken Roast in New York City on Monday, Aug. 10, which is part meal (and live cooking demonstration by Sohla El-Waylly), part comedy show.

“There’s nothing more fun to me than dinner theater,” Stalter says of the event, adding that guests can expect “good-spirited” chicken roast jokes.
