One of Hollywood’s most beloved entertainers, Carol Burnett, has reached another milestone, turning 93 on Sunday.
With a career spanning more than 71 years, the award-winning actress, comedian, singer and writer remains a powerful force in entertainment, still earning praise for recent roles while being celebrated as a true pioneer in television history.
Burnett’s legacy is built on decades of unforgettable performances across stage, film, and television. She has collected an impressive list of honors, including seven Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards.
Her influence runs so deep that in 2019, the Golden Globes created the Carol Burnett Award for career achievement in television, naming her its very first recipient.

Burnett’s rise to fame began long before she became a household name. After studying theater at UCLA, she moved to New York City to chase her dream. Her breakout moment came in 1959 on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress, earning her a Tony Award nomination. Soon after, she gained national attention on The Garry Moore Show, winning her first Emmy Award in 1962.
Her biggest breakthrough came with The Carol Burnett Show, which aired from 1967 to 1978. The series made history as Burnett became the first woman to host a comedy-variety show, something many believed only men could do at the time.
The show blended comedy sketches, music and parody, creating iconic moments and characters that audiences still remember today.
Over its 11-year run, the show earned dozens of awards and became a defining piece of television history. Its success helped break gender barriers in the industry, opening doors for future female comedians and performers.
Burnett’s film career also flourished, with roles in Annie (1982), The Four Seasons (1981), and Noises Off (1992). On television, she continued to shine with guest appearances, including an Emmy-winning role on Mad About You. Even in recent years, she has impressed audiences with performances in Better Call Saul (2022), Palm Royale (2024), and Hacks (2025).

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Burnett faced a difficult childhood marked by poverty and family struggles. She moved to Hollywood with her grandmother and grew up in a small apartment near Hollywood Boulevard. Despite these challenges, she found joy in movies and music, early influences that shaped her future career.
Her journey wasn’t easy. She once recalled a turning point during a college performance, saying:
“They laughed and it felt great. All of a sudden, after so much coldness and emptiness in my life, I knew the sensation of all that warmth wrapping around me.”
That moment helped her realize her passion for performing—a feeling she would spend the rest of her life chasing.
Burnett also stayed true to a promise made early in her career. After receiving financial help from a stranger to move to New York, she later gave back by supporting scholarships for aspiring performers, helping others follow their dreams.
Even in her 90s, Burnett continues to inspire. Her recent role in Palm Royale earned strong reviews, with critics praising her performance as sharp and unforgettable. She also made history again by becoming the oldest nominee for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at age 91.
Reflecting on her journey, Burnett once spoke about breaking barriers in television:“They said it was a man's game… because it hadn't been done. But that doesn't mean it couldn't be done.”
From her early days performing in nightclubs to becoming a television legend, Burnett’s story is one of resilience, talent and lasting impact. As she celebrates her 93rd birthday, her legacy continues to shape the world of entertainment and make generations laugh.
