For Jon Stewart, you need thick skin to survive the spotlight.

During "The Daily Show" Monday, June 8, the outspoken comedian and late-night host criticized President Donald Trump for abruptly exiting his recent interview on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The president ended a pre-taped interview on the morning talk show, which aired June 7, after host Kristen Welker challenged him about unsubstantiated claims of "cheating" in the California primary elections.

Welker noted that "Republicans are doing well in California" following the June 2 primary contests, but Trump countered that "they're dropping fast because it's a rigged election." The news anchor then asked Trump if he had evidence to support his claims, and the president later told her that California officials are "crooked, just like you're crooked, your press is crooked and 'Meet the Press' is crooked."

"Now, you could view this as the hissy fit of an incredibly fragile man baby, whose paper-thin skin can't handle venturing out of the sycophantic embrace of his tongue-bathing acolytes," Stewart said on "The Daily Show."

"Or, actually, I don't know how else you can view it. It really is just that. It's sad. It's very sad."

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle pushed back against Stewart's comments in a statement to USA TODAY Tuesday, June 9.

"Jon Stewart is a talentless hack who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome," Ingle said. "[It] has rotted his peanut-sized brain and ruined his life to the point he has to compensate for his embarrassing inadequacies."

"Trump Derangement Syndrome," a politically charged insult often used by Trump and his administration against his critics, is a term that characterizes opposition to the president as a psychological impairment. The phrase draws influence from conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer's previous term, "Bush derangement syndrome."

The dustup between Trump and Welker arrived during a rain-heavy sit down, full of weather-related interruptions, which Stewart poked fun at during his monologue.

"Now, we all know Trump's not actually going to leave the building," Stewart teased. "Because it's raining out, and as you know, moisture is the natural enemy of the North American comb-over."

Trump reflected on the tense conversation during an agriculture roundtable in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on June 5, attributing his outburst to the poor weather conditions.

"I just did an interview in the most beautiful barn I've ever seen," Trump said. "It was a beauty, but it was raining. And it was with NBC fake news. And because it was raining, I got a little bit angry at them. I was not happy with them. But we had a good time."
