Khleo Thomas has kept in touch with a few of his Holes costars

The actor, 36, shares with PEOPLE which of the actors he's closest to

"Me and Miguel Castro are partners in crime," he says

Over 20 years ago, Khleo Thomas joined a cast of fellow teens in the deserts of California to film the 2003 hit Holes.

Now, the 36-year-old actor reveals to PEOPLE who he still keeps in touch with from the coming-of-age film.

“Me and Miguel Castro, the actor who plays Magnet, we're very close," Thomas shares. "He's a big community guy. He's constantly giving back. He is constantly doing really cool things for the city of Los Angeles."

“I was in Orlando, and he FaceTimes me. He'll do that. He won't tell me, but he'll just FaceTime me. When he FaceTimes me, I know he's at a school," the Roll Bounce actor adds. "He'll FaceTime me, and he'll be in a classroom, and you'll just hear the kids go crazy. Me and Miguel Castro are partners in crime.”

Castro played one of the young boys at the fictional Camp Green Lake, alongside Thomas’ character Zero, in Holes, based on the 1998 book by Louis Sachar. Along with Thomas and Castro, the Andrew Davis-directed movie starred Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette and Eartha Kitt, to name a few.

Sachar's book follows Stanley Yelnats, played by LaBeouf in the movie, as he is sent to a boys' desert detention center after being wrongfully convicted of theft. At the "camp," he and a group of boys are tasked with digging holes every day under the watch of the strict warden. As the boys got closer together in the film, so did the actors.

'Holes' cast and crew reunite for 20th anniversary in 2023, including Shia LaBeouf, Miguel Castro, Jon Voight, Byron Cotton, and Khleo Thomas.

Recently, Thomas reunited with Weaver, who played Warden Walker in the film, at the Star Wars celebration in Japan.

“I got a chance to see Sigourney Weaver this year at Star Wars celebration in Japan, which was on the day of the anniversary of Holes, which was crazy," he tells PEOPLE. "How are we both in Japan at this time? It was amazing. It was meant to be.”

Thomas also shared a picture of the two on Instagram at the time, captioned, “22 years TODAY Holes hit the big screen. And on the anniversary I stood across from The Warden herself, the legendary Sigourney Weaver. No shovel in hand, just a heart full of gratitude," he wrote, calling the moment "surreal."

Thomas also recently tapped back into nostalgia with a partnership with Froot Loops. The actor partnered with the cereal brand for the“Follow Your Ears” campaign, which celebrates the 1,000+ Hip-Hop shoutouts to the brand in songs. Fans could comment on which songs featured the Froot Loops mention for a chance to win Kristopher Kites' designed jewelry inspired by the brand.
