Frances Tiafoe reacted to Michelle Obama’s heartfelt anniversary message to Barack Obama as the former US president and First Lady celebrated 34 years of marriage.
Barack and Michelle Obama began dating in 1989 and got engaged in July 1991 after Barack proposed to Michelle at a Chicago restaurant. The couple tied the knot on Oct. 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
Michelle Obama took to social media to mark their anniversary, sharing a heartfelt tribute to her husband. She posted a video featuring clips and pictures of adorable moments from their relationship on Instagram. With Stevie Wonder’s song “As” playing in the background, she also penned a sweet message for her husband in the caption. It read:
“Loving you just keeps getting better and better! Happy anniversary, @BarackObama. Here’s to many many more years of joy, laughter, and memories to come. 💕”
This emotional post caught Tiafoe’s attention, with the American tennis star reposting the video on his Instagram Story and adding two emojis:

Michelle Obama was among the high-profile figures watching the match from Arthur Ashe Stadium. During his post-match press conference in September 2022, Tiafoe revealed that he had noticed her in the stands before she was introduced to the crowd. Calling the moment “crazy,” he said:
“I mean, I seen her like 2-1 in the first, kind of turned my head right. She looked at me. Before they announced her, put it on the Jumbotron, I already seen her. Everybody was pointing at her. I think I shanked a return. Yeah, she thinks I can’t make a return. Seeing her there was crazy. Obviously, there was a lot of who’s who in there tonight. Obviously, we all know what she means. Crazy,” said Frances Tiafoe.
He added:
“Seen her before, but it’s a little bit different circumstance. She sees me and she’s actually excited to see me. Yeah, unbelievable. Unbelievable night.”
Frances Tiafoe became the first Black American man to reach the US Open semifinals since Arthur Ashe in 1972 and was the first American man overall to reach the last four at the tournament since Roddick in 2006.
