The England and Argentina World Cup team buses were involved in an unusual incident as Thomas Tuchel’s team overtook the defending champions on the highway.

The Three Lions and Argentina will meet inside Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium for a spot in Sunday’s final against Spain. Argentina is looking to go back-to-back after winning the tournament in 2022, but will face longtime rivals England, who are looking for their first World Cup final appearance since their 1966 win.

There’s no love lost between the two nations, with their rivalry fueled by longstanding political tension and iconic sporting moments. It will be England and Argentina’s first meeting since 2005, with the Three Lions winning six of their meetings against the reigning world and South American champions, drawing five, and losing three.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, and the two teams arrived at Mercedes-Benz Stadium early to begin pre-match preparations. However, both teams were involved in an unusual incident when England’s team bus passed the Argentines on the highway.

The match will reignite one of football’s fiercest rivalries. Tension first arose at the 1966 World Cup in England, when the two teams met in the quarter-finals.

England won 1-0 on their way to winning their only World Cup to date, but the game saw then-captain Antonio Rattin sent off. The two countries then went to war less than two decades later, in 1982, over the Falkland Islands.

The conflict resulted in 907 confirmed casualties, with the majority coming on the Argentine side, after the country invaded the Island.

Four years later, the two teams met in the 1986 World Cup, where Maradona's infamous “Hand of God” goal took place. It was the first of two for Argentina in the 2-1 quarter-final affair.

In the sporting theater, tensions were further heightened in the 1998 Round of 16. David Beckham was sent off as England lost 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
