Andrew Mukuba went up for what looked like a game-changing interception on Sunday night, and moments later the Eagles safety was down on the turf while a stadium full of fans held its breath.

Early in the first quarter of Philadelphia’s game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium, Jayden Daniels threw a pass that Mukuba leapt to snag out of the air, getting roughly eight feet off the ground before coming down hard. The play looked like a massive early swing for an Eagles team that has struggled all season.

It never counted, because an offside penalty wiped out the interception. Mukuba stayed down after the fall, and trainers rushed over to check on him while the game paused.

Mukuba got up and walked to the sideline under his own power, then headed into the blue medical tent for further evaluation.

The second-round pick out of Texas and Clemson, selected 64th overall in the 2025 draft, was on his way to a strong rookie season, with two interceptions, three pass deflections and 46 tackles in 11 games, when he fractured his ankle against Dallas in Week 12 and needed surgery. He was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 26, 2025.

His first career interception came against Kansas City, when he picked off a ball that deflected off Travis Kelce’s hands and returned it 41 yards, and his second came off former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

His path to the NFL has been unusual. Mukuba was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to parents who were refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and his family moved to Austin, Texas, when he was nine after being granted asylum in 2012.

He was introduced to football in fifth grade by his P.E. teacher and went on to become a four-star recruit, starting as a freshman at Clemson and earning ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

The Eagles needed the spark. Philadelphia entered the night 2-5 and without quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season with blood clots in his lungs, so Tanner McKee is running the offense.

Receiver DeVonta Smith was also out with a hamstring injury. The defense, which ranked fifth in points allowed last year, has dropped to 21st.

The Commanders, at 1-4-1, were without receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive tackle Daron Payne, both out for the season.

The game was scoreless early. Washington opened with a 44-yard kickoff return from Luke McCaffrey, but back-to-back false starts, one on Daniels, forced the Commanders to settle for a 55-yard field goal try that went wide right.

Philadelphia then went three-and-out when McKee, under pressure, missed Darius Cooper on third down.
