- Actor Danny Glover recently revealed he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2022.

- The 79-year-old's daughter Mandisa told PEOPLE she noticed the beginnings of her father's diagnosis after he received the Oscars' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022.

- "He'd tell you so much about his parents — and I've heard those stories over and over — and pieces were missing," she recalled.

Danny Glover's gift for storytelling gave his daughter Mandisa her first sign that something was different with the actor the same year he was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

On Wednesday, the *Lethal Weapon* star revealed that he learned in 2022 that he had the progressive neurodegenerative condition. In conversation with PEOPLE, Mandisa revealed that she noticed a shift in her father's behavior around the time that he received the Oscars’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his lifelong dedication to charitable work and activism.

"The history of my dad is that he remembers every single thing back to 1970, what corner he was standing on, who he spoke to, what they spoke about, what color they were wearing, everything," she shared with the outlet. "He'd tell you so much about his parents — and I've heard those stories over and over — and pieces were missing. There would be pieces of the story missing. I said, 'I wonder what's going on.'"

Nowadays, Mandisa said life with her father finds that "he’s aware sometimes and then sometimes not."

*The Color Purple* actor himself admitted that he's "still not accepting in my mind all parts of" the diagnosis.

“There are the moments that you keep remembering that validate the fact that you can remember stuff," Glover said. "And there are moments I'll never forget."

Per the Mayo Clinic, Alzheimer's is the leading cause of dementia, with a buildup of proteins in the brain eventually leading to the death of brain cells and brain shrinkage.

However, for now, Glover said that he feels the most clear and aware early in the day.

"When I wake up, I try to figure out something," Glover said. "Reading something, looking at something. *Democracy Now!* is a show that I love."

Glover's younger brother, Marty, lives with him at Glover's longtime San Francisco townhouse, where he also helps with his care. As someone who has witnessed his brother's rise from his side, the 67-year-old told PEOPLE that the dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s is heartbreaking to watch.

"You see the deterioration, and you think, 'Wow,'" Marty shared. "Sometimes you get emotional about it. It's tough, because you don't want to see nobody go through this."

He added, "Everybody thinks he's Mister (Glover's complicated villain in *The Color Purple)*. He's the greatest guy I ever met in my life. He saved me. I've been to jails, institutions, used drugs. Growing up, we weren't close until I started getting into trouble. And then he came and got me out and moved me down to Hollywood, and we've been inseparable ever since."

Marty continued, "We just want him to live his best life, like he made us live ours."

Mandisa agreed with her uncle's sentiment, adding, "It's either this, or he's not here. I'm grateful."
