Congratulations are in order for Ivan “Vanya” Beerkus and Angela Nikolau.

The couple, known for appearing in the Netflix documentary *Skywalkers: A Love Story*, just became engaged — and are on top of the world about their latest relationship milestone. Beerkus popped the question 1,454 feet above the streets of New York atop the Empire State Building on July 1.

The couple was on top of the building for about 30 minutes, where Beerkus got down on one knee and popped the question to Nikolau.

At another point of their stunt, the couple climbed to the very top, holding onto the building's antenna and waved a flag that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace," a quote that has been attributed to Jimi Hendrix.

"Empire State Building, New York," they simply captioned their joint Instagram post, which featured pictures of them on the antenna and showing off Nikolau's new bling.

Per CBS News, their ascent started around 12 p.m., and the newly engaged pair was taken into police custody around 1 p.m. There were no reported injuries from the stunt. According to Deadline, the stunt proposal was not part of any Netflix production.

*Skywalkers: A Love Story *premiered at Sundance in January 2024 and dropped on Netflix that July with footage from over seven years and six countries of the couple's most intense climbs. The documentary details the couple preparing to scale Malaysia’s Merdeka 118 super-skyscraper.

"There’s a danger to romance," documentary co-director Jeff Zimbalist told Netflix’s Queue in 2024 of Beerkus and Nikolau's relationship.

"It crushes us. It breaks our hearts. It breaks our hopes. Here, that danger is material. If the love falls apart, if the trust falls apart, it’s life or death. That felt like such a potent way of taking this amorphous sense that we all have in our romance and externalizing it and making it tangible," he said.

Proposals from the top of the Empire State Building are nothing new, but there are other ways to create an iconic moment.

"The unauthorized incident at the building has been resolved with the constructive and helpful coordination of the NYPD," a statement shared with * *from an Empire State Building Spokesperson reads.

"There was at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and Empire State Building Observation Deck guests. It is to be emphasized that the Empire State Building Observation Deck, atop the World's Most Famous Building in the center of New York City, does offer a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals."

Actor and musician Jared Leto previously climbed to the top of the Empire State Building in 2023.
